Am I Too Old For Orthodontic Treatment?

When you mention orthodontic treatment, most people automatically assume you’re talking about patients who are tween or teens. It’s true that a large percentage of orthodontic patients are in this demographic, but children and adults are closing that gap more with every passing year. In fact, statistics show that almost 30% of all current patients are over the age of 18!

Here at Nirenblatt Orthodontics, we often hear from adults who are worried that the chance for a straighter, healthier smile has already passed them by. But orthodontics has no upper age limit and it’s never too late to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted with braces or aligners. As long as your teeth, gums, and jawbone are healthy, you could be a great fit for our treatment options.

If you’ve spent a lifetime feeling self-conscious about the way your teeth look or feel, there’s never been a better time to explore how orthodontic treatment can improve your oral health. Let’s take a closer look at why more adults are choosing orthodontics and how treatment can give you a smile worth sharing!

Am I Too Old For Orthodontic Treatment?

Why are more adults looking into orthodontics?

The American Association of Orthodontists surveyed adult patients what was driving their desire for orthodontic treatment. Turns out, there were a number of factors behind this trend. We’ll examine some of them below!

Awareness of the importance of a healthy smile

Most children and teens in braces are undergoing orthodontic treatment because their parents have chosen it for them. Even though they may understand the importance of it and love the final results, adult patients usually have a better “real world” understanding of how braces or aligners can impact their lives.

As we get older, we also tend to gain a better understanding of how our oral health is connected to our total body health. This often leads to adult patients seeking out dental or orthodontic treatment to help keep their teeth and gums in tip-top shape! In other words, as an adult, you’ll be able to truly grasp that orthodontic treatment is an investment that pays big dividends in self-confidence and personal health.

A desire for increased oral health

It’s easy to appreciate the way orthodontics can improve the cosmetic appearance of your smile, but the health benefits are nothing to sneeze at, either! Crooked or crowded teeth can make it difficult to brush and floss effectively, increasing the risks of tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental health problems. Misalignment can cause excess wear and tear on the teeth and enamel, which can cause headaches, jaw aches, and pain in the face and neck. Orthodontic treatment can reduce or eliminate these symptoms.

The decreased likelihood of serious oral health problems in the future can mean major financial savings! This tends to be appreciated far more among adult patients who have a budget to balance. In the same vein, many adults are able to see orthodontic treatment for the long-term investment in wellness it really is. Besides improving their general oral health, braces and aligners can help patients overcome or avoid bothersome issues like teeth grinding, sleep apnea, and temporomandibular joint disorder.

More affordable treatment options

A beautiful new smile is more affordable than ever before thanks to innovative treatments and financial options to fit every budget. At Nirenblatt Orthodontics, we offer flexible payment plans, with financing done in our office instead of an outside third party. We’ll work with you to create a custom payment plan that fits your budget, and you’ll always know what to expect before beginning your treatment! We also accept most credit cards and have bank account autopay options for your convenience. Additionally, many dental insurance plans will cover orthodontic treatment.

What treatment options are available for adult patients?

There are far more options for treatment than there used to be! Adult patients who are uncomfortable with the idea of traditional metal braces can now opt for designs and styles that are far less noticeable. We’re proud to offer the following treatments to our adult patients.

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are usually what people picture when they think of orthodontics. However, today’s braces look nothing like their predecessors! The brackets are much smaller and no longer wrap around the entire tooth. Thinner archwires are used to move the teeth with more comfort and speed. You can even put a pop of personality into your treatment journey by choosing fun colors for your elastic bands! Metal braces are usually the most economical treatment option and are ideal for patients who have more serious or complex cases.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are the same shape and size as metal braces but use clear or tooth-colored brackets to blend in better with your natural smile. When paired with clear, white, or tooth-colored elastics, they provide a very subtle way to straighten your teeth! While the ceramic brackets are durable, they are more prone to breakage than metal brackets. They also tend to be a bit more costly than metal braces. For this reason, we usually only recommend them for our teen and adult patients. Clear braces can be an excellent option for adults who want the benefits of traditional metal braces without the visibility!

Invisalign clear aligner system

Instead of brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of clear removable aligners to move the teeth. These are made from a special thermoplastic resin and customized to fit over your teeth firmly but comfortably. Because they’re removable, they provide adult patients with a bit more freedom and flexibility than braces, and allow you to brush, floss, and eat as you normally would.

Dr. Nirenblatt has been using aligners since 1999, and he’s personally treated hundreds of patients in that time. He’s actually been published on the subject! Unlike some orthodontists, he’s able to use Invisalign to successfully treat severe cases as well as those that are more mild or moderate.

Our practice also offers in-house 3D printed aligners for touch-up treatments and special occasions like weddings, graduations, or senior pictures!
