At Nirenblatt Orthodontics, we see parents who seek help with their child’s smile every day. When children deal with oral issues such as crowded teeth or a misaligned bite, it can be harder to keep their teeth clean. This can result in excessive plaque buildup, cavities, and more. However, braces may seem like an intimidating treatment option for our younger patients. The good news is that Dr. Nirenblatt offers Invisalign First to give kids 7-10 a more comfortable Phase 1 orthodontic experience!
Invisalign First is a clear aligner system that gives children a comfortable and straightforward alternative to braces, giving them the same results without using any brackets and wires. This makes them an excellent choice for children who need Phase 1 treatment but aren’t ready for braces.
But what exactly is Invisalign First? Let’s look at how Invisalign differs from braces, how it works, and how it can give your child a stunning smile!
What is Invisalign First?
While Invisalign has traditionally been used to treat teens and adults with mild to moderate orthodontic issues, Invisalign First aligners are now available at Nirenblatt Orthodontics. Invisalign First is designed to treat a broad range of orthodontic problems in growing children. Also known as Phase 1 treatment, this is a great way for Dr. Nirenblatt to get great results for younger children without using traditional braces! Invisalign First aligners are:
- Able to treat various orthodontic issues in children, from simple to complex. This includes crowding, spacing, and narrow dental arches.
- Removable, making it easier for younger children to brush and floss effectively.
- Designed for comfort, so there’s no discomfort to the gums or cheeks from brackets rubbing against them or loose wires poking into them.
If you’re unfamiliar with Phase 1 treatment, we sometimes initiate it in children ages six through ten. At this time, an experienced orthodontist like Dr. Nirenblatt can already see issues that may need early treatment. This allows us to address any developing problems before they get the chance to become more serious. Invisalign First clear aligner treatment takes the unique needs of each young patient into consideration and is designed for predictable results.
How does Invisalign First work?
The first step in your child’s smile journey is an initial consultation, and here at Nirenblatt Orthodontics, your first visit is free of charge. This visit will include X-rays, an exam, and a consultation with Dr. Nirenblatt. We’ll discuss any orthodontic needs during this appointment and tell you if Invisalign First would be a good fit for your child.
If Invisalign First is the right choice for your child, we can begin mapping out a precise treatment plan using a highly detailed 3D scan of their teeth and gums. This plan will include the exact movements we want your child’s teeth to make and indicate how long your treatment is likely to take.
This 3D scan is also used to create your child’s custom aligners. The trays are made from Invisalign’s unique SmartTrack® material, so they are comfortable and virtually invisible, two benefits our patients love! There’s no “one size fits all” answer regarding how long treatment will last or how many aligners are needed to achieve the best results. However, treatment time usually averages between 5 and 15 months, and the total number of aligners required can be anywhere from 10-48 (or more!)
Since the aligners are removable, your child will need some help keeping up with the guidelines for care. They will be responsible for wearing them as directed by Dr. Nirenblatt. In order for the system to work, your child will need to wear their aligners for 20-22 hours daily during their treatment. Depending on their specific treatment plan, they will need to change their aligners every 1-2 weeks. This allows the aligners to keep up with your child’s teeth movements.
Regular check-ups are an essential part of your child’s treatment process, so you don’t want to skip them! You should expect to visit one of our three offices every 4-8 weeks or so, during which time Dr. Nirenblatt will check to ensure that everything is progressing according to schedule.
What advantages does Invisalign have over traditional orthodontic treatment?
Most people who have worn braces will tell you that giving up some of their favorite foods was one of the most complex parts of the treatment. To keep their brackets and wires protected, braces patients must avoid any food that is too crunchy or chewy, including some whole fruits and veggies, popcorn and chips, and several types of candy. With Invisalign First aligners, your child can take out their aligners whenever eating or drinking anything other than water, then put them back in when they’re done. No food restrictions can make orthodontic treatment a lot more fun for kids!
Having removable aligners instead of a fixed appliance makes it easier for kids to maintain a good oral hygiene routine. The wires, brackets, and bands that come with traditional braces can effectively make brushing and flossing difficult. With Invisalign, you remove aligners before brushing and flossing as usual. Cleaning the aligners themselves is a snap, too! There are special kits that have been designed specifically to clean Invisalign aligners, or you can gently clean them yourself using denture crystals and a soft toothbrush.
What happens after Invisalign treatment is complete?
Regardless of what orthodontic treatment Dr. Nirenblatt recommends, teeth will never forget their previous place in the mouth and naturally drift back towards those positions over time. This is why retainers are so crucial for every orthodontic patient! Once your child’s treatment is complete, we will provide you with a custom retainer. Your child should always wear their retainer exactly as Dr. Nirenblatt recommends to maintain their newly straightened smile.
