Let’s take a look at how yours can leave a lasting impression below!
Give your self-esteem a boost
When you don’t feel confident about your smile, you may find it difficult to step outside your comfort zone. But being successful in life often requires you to take risks! Having a smile you’re proud of can make you feel happier about your appearance in general and increase your self-esteem. In turn, this can encourage you to take chances that you might not normally entertain.
In fact, Invisalign actually conducted a survey on this topic! They found that almost 80% of adult orthodontic patients said a healthier smile gave them the confidence to do something they never would have considered doing before. We think that’s a pretty impressive statistic and certainly something to keep in mind if you feel like your current smile is holding you back in any way.
Set the stage for success with a smile
Greeting others with a genuine smile sets a positive tone in almost any situation and can really put the room at ease. It also makes you appear friendlier and easier to approach, which is something people really pay attention to, especially potential employers. Most companies aren’t just looking for someone with an impressive resume and the right credentials. It’s just as important that you’re a good fit for their company and a team player who can contribute to a welcoming work environment! A happy smile shows you can connect with coworkers and clients in a positive way and leaves them with exactly the right impression of you.
Lift your spirits (and brighten someone’s day!)
Humans excel at mimicking facial expressions, although it’s mostly something we do without thinking. This can trigger a similar emotional state in the person we’re chatting with, and help us understand each other better. It also shows that smiling really is contagious! It can also briefly boost your own mood, too. The next time you’re feeling a bit blue, try smiling for a minute or two and see how it helps to lift your spirits!
Yale University showed this in action when they conducted a study dividing volunteers into small groups and assigning them specific tasks. One team member was secretly instructed to act upbeat, and when that person entered the room with a smile on their face, the mood lifted almost immediately! Their positive attitude also influenced each individual’s performance for the better, and the group itself was more likely to achieve the goal it had been given.
The University of Kansas did a similar study where subjects were given stressful tasks to complete. Some were instructed to smile and others told to maintain a straight face. Researchers measured the heart rates of the participants, and the subjects were asked to self-report their stress levels as they performed the tasks.
When they reviewed the results, those who had been told to smile had lower heart rates and their bodies showed more resistance to stress. They also reported feeling more positive overall than those who were told to keep a straight face. As you can see, there’s more power in a smile than you might think!
Take advantage of snap judgments
Researcher Edward Thorndike coined the term “halo effect” in the 1920s to describe how our brains attribute multiple positive qualities to a person based on us observing just one positive quality. It may not be fair to form an opinion about people based on our perception of them, but it really does highlight how we never get a second chance to make a first impression!
One trait that’s been shown to kickstart the halo effect is an attractive smile. When you flash a beautiful smile, those around you will make assumptions about you based on it. They may presume you’re smarter, more successful, and even more trustworthy than someone who struggles with oral health. We’re taught not to judge a book by its cover, but it happens every day. A confident smile can make that halo effect work in your favor.
