When you decide to improve your oral health with orthodontic treatment, you may not be sure what your first step should be. There’s a world of information at your fingertips, but that can feel overwhelming sometimes. Nirenblatt Orthodontics is here to help! Every orthodontic journey begins with finding an experienced orthodontist who will listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and make you feel at home in their practice. With so many to choose from, it’s normal to feel a little lost as you begin your search. Let’s take a look at some of the questions you should ask when looking for the right orthodontist to treat your smile!
“What training do you have? How much experience?”
While this is technically two questions in one, they’re connected! Some people mistakenly believe that a dentist and orthodontist are interchangeable. This can be especially confusing now that so many dentists are offering treatments like clear aligner therapy along with their traditional services. While there are certainly many similarities between the two, there are also a number of significant differences any potential patient should be aware of.
An orthodontist like Dr. Nirenblatt is a dental specialist. After graduating from dental school, orthodontists take on extra years of education and training. During this time, they learn about:
- diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws
- oral disease
- biomedical science and biomechanics
- how to successfully manage tooth movement and facial development using various orthodontic techniques
As you can see, it’s no walk in the park! Dr. Nirenblatt is no stranger to the hard work and dedication it takes to become an orthodontist. After graduating in the top ten of his class at The Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine, he went on to gain his Certificate of Orthodontics from Columbia University in 1991. For almost 30 years now, he’s been helping generations of patients in Charleston achieve happy, healthy smiles they’ll be able to enjoy the rest of their lives! When you choose Nirenblatt Orthodontics, you are truly putting your smile into capable hands.
“How long will my treatment take?”
Every patient responds to treatment in their own way and each case we treat is different. For that reason, there’s no “one size fits all” answer to this question. In general, the length of treatment will be related to the complexity of your case. The more comprehensive the required treatment, the longer the treatment time will be. If you have a relatively healthy bite with only mild orthodontic issues, you may have a relatively short treatment time. More serious problems could require a longer amount of time in braces or aligners to get the best results.
If you’re considering a particular orthodontist, ask them to give you an estimated treatment time so you’ll have some idea of what to expect. Regular check-ups are also an essential part of the orthodontic process, so you may want to inquire about these as well to get a feel for how much time you’re likely to be spending in their office.
“How much will my treatment cost?”
Nobody likes hidden fees or unwelcome surprises when it comes to finances. Every smile is unique, so you’ll want to know everything included in your treatment plan before moving forward with the orthodontic process. When you schedule a FREE consultation with one of our three offices, we’ll go over all the applicable fees so you’ll always know exactly what to expect when it comes to investing in your new smile!

“What treatment options are available to me?”
There’s never been a better time to begin your orthodontic journey! Nirenblatt Orthodontics offers the following treatment options for a total smile transformation.
Traditional metal braces
Modern metal braces are made of high-quality stainless steel and more comfortable than ever before. They’re one of our most efficient treatments, particularly for more severe or complicated cases. The total treatment time for these newer designs tends to be shorter than it used to be.
These function in basically the same way traditional braces do but use translucent brackets instead of metal. When paired with clear, white, or tooth-colored elastics, they provide patients with an almost invisible treatment option! They can be a bit more delicate than metal braces, though, so we tend to recommend them for our older teen and adult patients only.
Invisalign and clear aligner therapy
Clear aligners are the most popular alternative we have to braces. The innovative design uses a series of clear removable aligners to gently move the teeth over time. The trays are made of a special thermoplastic resin and custom-designed to fit snugly over the teeth. Each one is replaced with the next in the series every 1-2 weeks in order to keep up with the movements the teeth are making. Because they’re removable, clear aligners provide patients with a bit more freedom and flexibility than braces do.
At Nirenblatt Orthodontics, we’re also able to treat mild alignment issues or mild relapses completely in house using our very own 3D printed aligners! Since this cuts out the “middle man,” it’s a faster and more affordable option.
